It’s been a while since venturing down to the Old Ambulance Depot but here’s good reason right here. Go Reborn’ers David Lemm (#GR5) and Jamie Johnson (#GR4), plus Al White, have produced work (across multiple forms) examining indigenous histories and cultures. The anthropological collaboration sees the team explore past rituals and tribal endeavours allowing us to be lead down a narrative that is somewhat reliant on a grand game of generational ‘Chinese whispers’, so to speak. What have we learnt and what truths do we still harbour (or indeed respect) from far flung ancestral ways, or are some of those practices worth their place in Room 101(?). The artists are ultimately allowing you to decide by deciphering their studies.

Great to see the space busy and the street having a hub of activity early on. Lots of different pieces from many of the local artists who have featured at Such in the past. I managed to get in 1 picture of mine calmly holding its own next to David Anderson’s muscly dude. On for 1 more week I think so get down if you’ve not had a chance to see it.

Three jewellers and an illustrator have made a fine stab at Edinburgh’s continued DIY gallery renaissance over the last 18 months. Such and Such provided a calming, white-walled bastion for emerging artistic talent amongst the throngs and punches that Leith Walk’s boulevard could throw (you). Predominantly a space to showcase the work of the residents – Alex, Caroline, Dave and Charlie – they also threw open the doors to external collaboration and promotion; indeed as go reborn were fortunate enough to explore over a weekend in November 2010 at #GR4.

With one of the four Such and Such founders taking on new pastures over west they’ve decided, admirably, to re-group and start a new agenda later in the year rather than re-stock in the current premises. As a final send off at Brunswick Street a group show does doth its cap to the many creatives who have been involved along the journey.. a retrospective of sorts featuring:

Jessica Harrison, Rabiya Choudry, Ross Fraser Mclean, Jamie Johnson, Al White, Ben Seeley, Callum Monteith, Catherine Johnston, Rachel Barron, Judith Clark, David Anderson, Stuart McMorris, Kristen Orme, Alex Gibbs, Matthew Swan, Natalie Ryde and more TBC

The exhibition will run from 13th – 29th January, before the space closes in February. Open 14th – 29th Jan, 12-5pm daily

Preview Friday 13th January, 7-9pm
Hope to see you all there. And please, be punctual..

go reborn’s first foray into exhibiting featured the intricate, left-field output of Rachel Barron. Gridded paper, geometrical patterns, pastel colours plus a box of personally over-heard quotes – that could have been produced from a recently liberated fortune-cookie factory – gave us a fascinating introduction to her art code. Her cartographical submission for #GR4 made us want to head out orienteering on a Tron circuit-board far drained of its neon.

This week she presents a pop-up workshop at Such & Such where visitors are invited to produce something of your own utilising her unique methods and instruments.

There’s been some wonderfully absorbing and influential double-acts in the art world over the years: Gilbert and George, Dalziel and Scullion, Tony Hart and Morph*.. and tonight Superclub plays host to the culmination of two artists peaking out after an eight month creative entanglement; a mapping out and processing of their influence on one and each others daily practices. Explore the ‘drawn-out’ transfusion from tonight in the cosy confines of the Guardian’s new kids on the block.

It’s hard not to be overly intrigued by this quote from the South African practitioner:

“Using gathered images, gestures and sounds, my work seeks to illuminate the spaces in between the corporeal and the intuitive, to chase the shadow left by the perceived physical. I look for the glow in an ordinary moment, and the underlying structure of things.”
