Here’s a piece I’ve put together on the Collective Gallery’s imminent move to Edinburgh’s City Observatory..

“From the southeast corner of Gayfield Square one can see Leith Walk’s curved avenues wending up to the bunched, silhouetted figures backlit on Calton Hill. During daylight they snake along the elevation, an assemblage of dark stoned historical structures as backdrop. This contour-cropped appreciation of the Acropolis (Lite) National Monument is, from this viewpoint point at least, mistakable for an unfinished motorway fly-over, with vista hunting lemmings perched perilously close to its edge. A rather morbid real time treasuring of the Athenian-nodding folly then, the pillars – having been designed by the New Town architectural demigod W H Playfair in the 19^th century as a memorial to those fallen in the Napoleonic Wars – left starkly incomplete.”

A sign of Summerhall’s potential in contemporary art programing is currently on show in a sleepy – but well worth hunting down – elbow of the vast arts and science complex. Resident visual artist Jonathan Freemantle (GR5) alongside long term friend and sculptor, Frode Bolhuis, exhibit an array of medium that although not obvious in terms of their physical curatorial adjoining, do very much become a force of mood and subconscious-led intrigue as you take in their work spread across the gallery and Freemantle’s studio.

Bolhuis’ 3D-printed, miniature furniture pieces and saturated human forms seize Freemantle’s deeply coloured, abstract paintings as if the latter’s are helping create backgrounds for the former’s incoming puppeteer productions. There is perhaps a more direct structural link between the sculptor’s wooden frame works and Freemantle’s flora-induced prism photography but any thought of a concerted collusion between the pair should be left at the door when you open your eyes to their very real dreams.

It’s been a while since venturing down to the Old Ambulance Depot but here’s good reason right here. Go Reborn’ers David Lemm (#GR5) and Jamie Johnson (#GR4), plus Al White, have produced work (across multiple forms) examining indigenous histories and cultures. The anthropological collaboration sees the team explore past rituals and tribal endeavours allowing us to be lead down a narrative that is somewhat reliant on a grand game of generational ‘Chinese whispers’, so to speak. What have we learnt and what truths do we still harbour (or indeed respect) from far flung ancestral ways, or are some of those practices worth their place in Room 101(?). The artists are ultimately allowing you to decide by deciphering their studies.

Go Reborn exhibitor Jonathan Freemantle has filmed and directed this video for the Machine Room. Indeed lead singer John Bryden and Jonathan exhibited together at #GR5 and so it’s great to see yet more cross-pollination in artistic mediums.

Popped down to the opening of Full Stop early on Friday and was greeted with a small overspill on to the street. Great to see the space busy and the street having a hub of activity early on. Lots of different pieces from many of the local artists who have featured at Such in the past. I managed to get in 1 picture of mine calmly holding its own next to David Anderson’s muscly dude. On for 1 more week I think so get down if you’ve not had a chance to see it.

Three jewellers and an illustrator have made a fine stab at Edinburgh’s continued DIY gallery renaissance over the last 18 months. Such and Such provided a calming, white-walled bastion for emerging artistic talent amongst the throngs and punches that Leith Walk’s boulevard could throw (you). Predominantly a space to showcase the work of the residents – Alex, Caroline, Dave and Charlie – they also threw open the doors to external collaboration and promotion; indeed as go reborn were fortunate enough to explore over a weekend in November 2010 at #GR4.

With one of the four Such and Such founders taking on new pastures over west they’ve decided, admirably, to re-group and start a new agenda later in the year rather than re-stock in the current premises. As a final send off at Brunswick Street a group show does doth its cap to the many creatives who have been involved along the journey.. a retrospective of sorts featuring:

#GR6 as part of Noir! #10 ‘A Christmas Fair’

A fashion, food and cultural extravaganza for all the family.. and in aid of Home Start Edinburgh W & SW

go reborn are mightily proud to be part of (easily) the most forward thinking event to appear amongst the throngs of markets and fairs in Edinburgh this Christmas. Showcasing the talents of Scottish creatives it’s a massive day of bespoke exhibits and pop-up stalls with poetry, film and music also in attendance, 11am-7pm. With food and beverages stocking up in the glorious surrounds of The Dissection Room plus amazing installs from Edinburgh College of Art, Charlie Anderson and Superclub it’s going to be incredible. Oh, and did we mention a HUGE fashion market in Summerhall’s Main Hall with brands such as Godiva, Harris Tweed, Such&Such and Chou Chou Couture strutting their wares.. and all culminating in a fashion show from the Noir! team!!

We’ve pulled together the FRESHEST works from go reborn luminaries Elph, Robbie Porter, Rachel Barron, Stuart McMorris, Gen Ryan plus apparel a-plenty from Aware Injustice to present PRESENTS of all shapes, sizes and prices. Hope to see y’all!
